Gill Landry: Skeleton at the Banquet

Landry — formerly of Old Crow Medicine Show — wrote these songs while spending the summer in small-town Western France. He doesn’t say, but we bet 80s-vintage Leonard Cohen was being played as he wrote; Cohen of that era will spring to mind when you play it.

Musically, its dominated by Landry’s soft baritone; the music is slow Americana but you’d not badly mislead someone by calling him an American Richard Hawley. The music is layered, sophisticated and intricate, though it’s lyrically-driven.

In the Press release, Landry said that moving to France gave him perspective for the album, which is “a series of reflections and thoughts on the collective hallucination that is America .. with a few love songs thrown in.”

It’s lovingly and carefully made and a quality album, although the pace (slow) and mood (thoughtful) don’t vary.
