Previous releases — this is his fifth studio album — have been just Varley and guitar; powerful songs maybe (try Something Is Breaking from Kingsdown Sundown) but still acoustic. This new album has a full band and sees him up his game considerably: comparisons with the likes of Marc Cohn or even The Boss in his more acoustic moments would not go amiss.
The additional instrumentation, particularly the addition of the rhythm section, gives weight to his old sound, while the guitar / pedal steel works to counter against his powerful songs. Violins and piano add class. He’s got a powerful voice and it’s an album with more gravitas than previous releases.
